"A freezing night in Prague"
By Mike Vince
I can well remember the first time I met Graham Taylor.I had been a season ticket holder at Watford and had been asked to join the 'Keep Watford FC in Watford action committee ' amid fears of a move away from the Borough.
We were just ending a meeting with Chief Executive Eddie Plumley when the door opened and Graham, tracksuited and just back from training walked in.
There was something about the man,his presence, his charisma in one brief handshake and a few short words that made me realise-I really do want to be part of this.
When my career took me from season ticket holder to radio reporter working with Graham was huge motivation, yet he always had time-he made it and made everyone feel trhey were part of an incredible journey.
There are many(some unrepeatable) stories of working with the football club during Graham's first era.
One probably sums the man up.I was lucky enough to travel with the official party from the club to those unforgettable European games in the UEFA Cup.
History shows it all ended on a freezing night in Prague shortly before Christmas.I was the only local radio man with the party and was making a documentary.I was interviewing Graham as we climbed the steps of our plane for the journey home.At the top we stood and looked back over the City.Time for my last question 'Graham as we stand here looking out over the city as this particular chapter ends, what are your final thoughts?'
He paused, looked at the city, looked at me and replied 'It's ****** cold out here'
